It all began with a crow's nest tree lookout in 1921. About 1928, a frame cabin living quarters was added. In 1935, the present 72' steel tower was constructed, and a new ground cabin was built in 1940. The ground cabin was torn down in 2006, but the lookout continues to be staffed in the summer, and is listed on the National Historic Lookout Register.
